Behavioral Assessment and Intervention - Presenters: Vanessa Rodriguez, PhD BCBA-D, Clinical Psychologist and Katherine Sikora, MA BCBA COBA, Senior Behavior Support Specialist with Nisonger Adult Behavior Support Services

This presentation will discuss the use of behavioral assessment methods in addressing the needs of individuals diagnosed with intellectual or developmental disability (IDD) exhibiting challenging behavior and the role of comorbid psychiatric disorder in symptom presentation.  Intervention strategies will be discussed.

  1. Be able to define the concept of Establishing Operation
  2. Understand the role mental health status plays as an establishing operation for challenging behavior.
  3. Be able to identify prevention strategies to minimize the impact of mental health instability on behavioral presentation.
  4. Discussion of how to cooperate with prescribers for those who need medication. 

Identifying and Accessing Supports for those with DD and Co—Occurring Mental Health Concerns - Presenter: Tom Fish, PhD, Director of Social Work and Family Support Services, Nisonger Center. 

This presentation will explore creative ways to understand and access community based services given that that the absolute perfect program may not exist. Participants will learn strategies for helping clients to discern the services and supports that make most sense for them.
       1. To understand service options available and how to access such.
       2. To learn strategies for engaging clients in their own care and well-being.
       3. To understand components of existing best service delivery practices.

Medical Aspects of Treating Emotional and Behavioral Problems Associated with IDD - Presenter: L. Eugene Arnold, M.D., M.Ed. and/or Karen Ratliff-Schaub, MD, MBOE

This presentation will review the general approach to medicating mental, emotional, and behavioral problems in persons with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD). The evidence base will be described along with practical ways to adapt evidence from the general population to those with IDD.

At the end, the audience will:

  1. Be able to name the drugs with a specific FDA indication in IDD.
  2. Understand some ways that drug response in IDD differs from response in neurotypical patients.
  3. Understand the importance of integrating medication management with behavioral treatment, and some ways to promote it.

These sessions, presented by the faculty of the Ohio State University Nisonger Center, will address aspects of the Behavioral Health of Individuals with Developmental disabilities related to assessment, treatment, and resources.


5 hours of DODD certification is approved for Adult Services/Day Habilitation, Service & Support Administration, Superintendent, and Investigative Agent.

Early Intervention and County Board Member is NOT approved.

5 hours of Social Worker, Counselor and Marriage & Family Therapist certification is approved.

You must attend entire training to receive certification.
