2019 - Columbus - Trauma Informed Care and the Intellectually Disabled: Understanding Effective Practices

This day long workshop will give the participant insight into how trauma and Intellectual Disabilities intersect and practical strategies for approaching and interacting with ID clients who have long traumatic histories. Dynamics of post- traumatic stress will be explained with ways to prevent re-traumatization and understand how to help clients deal with distress and trauma. Assessment tools for trauma and ways for staff to better understand their clients will be presented. Case examples will be shared of clients’ triggers and ways staff can help minimize fear and reaction. Numerous presentation methods will be used including: short group discussions, short videos and illustrative role plays. Participants will leave with a better understanding of effective approaches and how a client’s past can contribute to today’s problems and answers for tomorrow’s solutions.

{10:55-11:25} - Assessment Tools for Trauma Clients (ACES; Trauma Timelines) - 30 minutes

{11:25-12:00} Lunch

{12:00-1:30} - Learning from Case Examples - 90 minutes

{1:30-2:30} - Effective Approaches for Staff in interaction with Clients - 60 minutes

{2:30-2:40} Break

{2:40-3:40} - Promising Treatments - Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Eye Desensitization, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Treatment - 60 minutes

{3:40-4:10} - Wrapping Things Up - Take Aways - 30 minutes

 

6 hours of DODD certification is approved for Adult Services, Service & Support Administration, Superintendent, Investigative Agent and County Board Member.

Early Intervention is NOT approved.

6 hours of Social Worker, Counselor and Marriage & Family Therapist certification is approved.

You must attend the entire training to receive certification.
