Most of you got into this field because you wanted to “Make a Difference”! Yetsometimes it feels like you spend most of your time on paperwork; ensuring all the (t)sare crossed and the (i)s dotted. It can be difficult to remember “(The)Why” we tookthis job in the first place. Dr. Bauer will take you on a journey through some of hispersonal experiences as a young boy born with sensorineural hearing loss through hisprofessional career as an educator, licensed counselor and author. Along the way, hewill challenge you to consider the experiences of people with developmentaldisabilities in a new light. Afterall, when we include people in the process, we developplans that empower others to live a life they love; and that’s OUR WHY…the reasonwe do what we do!
Bill is from Southeastern Ohio, born and raised in Marietta, Ohio. He has served as a school teacher, principal and interim superintendent. Bill completed hi undergraduate degree at Ohio University in Special Education focusing on several cognate areas and certifications/licensures including emotional disturbance intellectual disabilities (mild to severe), learning disabilities, autism and physical/orthopedic and other health impairments. He completed his master’s degree at Ohio University in School Administration (focus on Supervision). Later, Bill became interested in the psycho-social aspect of disability (mental health/dual diagnosis -intellectual disabilities and mental illness) and earned another graduate degree in Counseling (Master’s) and a PhD. in Rehabilitation Services from The Ohio State University. His dissertation focused on high school transition aged youth and leadership. Dr Bauer is a nationally certified Rehabilitation Counselor as well as a licensed professional counselor in West Virginia and Ohio. He is an approved licensed professional supervisor (ALPS) in West Virginia as well. Bill is longtime advocate for disability rights and has served on the Disability Rights of Ohio board (founding member), Chair of the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission (now Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities), and a past chair of the Ohio State Advisory Panel for Exceptional Children and the State Council for Exceptional Children – Teacher Education Division. Bill is also a certified instructor in Mental Health First Aid for adults, youth and teens. When he’s not working, Bill enjoys traveling the globe and coaching swimming. He has coached competitive swimming for 30+ years. Dr. Bauer is also a published author.
